Relay Tour of Britain

Route Details 05

Okay I hope you are tempted to take part - remember you don't have to do the whole tour or even a whole day. Do as many miles as you like, or just meet up at one of the stops.

Day #1 - Liverpool to the Lakes (140m): Photo opportunity at Speke on the site of the former factory 10:00 and then the Skiddaw - one of only 3 hills in the Lakes over 3000ftwe get the longest stretch of motorway/dual carriage way done with early doors as we cover about 90miles of 3 lane carriageway to get us to the Lake District.

Heading off from Kendall we'll pass lakes Windermere and Grassmere on our way to Keswick... now excuse me for not being too enthralled but I'll allow others to wander around the 'Pencil Museum' (yes really) which houses the world's largest pencil (whoopee do).

From Keswick the route winds around the B5289, along Honister Pass, past both Buttermere & Crummock Water before taking the Winlatter Pass back toward Keswick and the overnight stop; having covered approx 145miles.

Day #2 - Lakes to South Yorkshire (315m): Waving turrah to the lakes we steamThe ruins at Middleham down the A66 to Brough and head off (still on the A66) to Barnard Castle - I assume Barnard once had a castle there? I would research it but it's taken long enough already to do this! Anyway we're skirting the north of the Yorkshire Dales at this point. Egglestone Abbey, the ruins of, lies along the Tees and would be worth a quick stop, having done 60miles from Keswick some refreshments may be required.

Running on the A6108 Middleham provides another castle ruin before we get toMasham; at Duncombe Parkwhich point the Yorkshire Moors invites us across, via Thirsk, to just nibble at the Southern point. The trip into York is via the B1363. Concious of keeping on track it may be advisable to stay around Goole which would be 170miles for the day and around 315 in total.

Day #3 - South Yorkshire to Norfolk coast (480m): Similar to Day 1 there's some 3 lane black-top to start the day - thankfully it's only 25miles or so, as we prepare to scythe through Lincolnshire from North West to South East, touching on Nottinghamshire in the process. And it's Nottinghamshire that asks us for some cash as the River Trent is crossed at Dunham Bridge.

Passing through Lincoln we head out toward ConingsbyTyphoon Jet at Coningsby RAF base and could also detour to see the only working Fen steam engine at Dogdyke... being a Fen boy from the Isle of Eels I'm a tad miffed that the engine is in Lincoln - better known to Wegista's as the home of Rimmer Bros.

From Coningsby we continue South East to Boston (easy now our friends from across the pond!) and around the Wash into Norfolk. Along the Norfolk coast we pass the Sandringham Estate and the many Burnham vilages are worthy of a visit - Burnham Thorpe being the birth place of a certain Horatio Nelson, his ship 'The Victory' was recycled into the church lecturn... obviously not the whole ship or it'd be the biggest lecturn known to man! Incidentally it was just outside Burnham Market where the co-pilot and I took TRisha for her first run after her restoration in 1993.

The coast around Wells-next-the-Sea is a worthy resting place having covered around 165miles on Day #3.

I hope you like the sound of getting involved - remember you don't have to do a whole day it's up to you how many miles you do. It's for a good cause and the more people escorting the baton or meeting in the evenings the better

You've convinced me I want to be involved!
